Lithium-ion batteries are commercially available for many purposes. In the cycling world, LIBs are used to power electric-assist systems for bikes, scooters, and trikes.  Compared to lead-acid batteries, LIBs are significantly lighter.  The trade-off? They are more expensive. Common Lithium-Ion Battery Challenges

Like any bike component subject to heavy use on the streets, batteries sometimes fail on the job. Conditions leading to compromised systems include insecure installation of the batteries as well as improper charging systems according to Barry Tumer, Revolution head of operations. Within the battery system itself, the most common problems are burnt-out cells and damage to the Battery Management System (BMS). The BMS monitors the output of the battery and keeps the cells from exceeding their voltage limits.  Revolution takes apart the batteries, repairs the faulty components, and reassembles them at a price point a good deal lower than replacement cost.
